Easy Experiment: Rising Tissue Paper

This fun experiment demonstrates how static electricity is created.

Rising Tissue Paper

What you need:

  • - Scissors
  • - Tissue paper
  • - Wool sweater
  • - Plastic comb

Steps:

    1. Cut the tissue paper into small pieces.
    2. Rub the comb against a wool sweater (or comb through your hair) around 10 times.
    3. Hold the comb above the pieces of tissue paper.
    4. The tissue paper will be pulled up by the charged comb.

Explanation:

By rubbing the comb against a wool sweater, or combing it through your hair repeatedly you are creating a charge of static electricity.  The static is attracting the tissue paper and making it look like it is magically rising.
